What is Senate Bill 776?

Senate Bill 776 became law in Texas on September 1st, 2021. SB 776 relates to creating an inclusive sports program by the University Interscholastic League (UIL) to provide students with intellectual disabilities access to co-ed team sports. The UIL has partnered with Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) to fulfill this obligation, and public school campuses are encouraged to participate in Unified competitions, now sanctioned by the UIL. Through UIL-recognized Unified Sports and Activities, we can make profound changes in the lives of students with and without disabilities.  

The SB 776 currently offers only varsity teams for basketball and track. However, Tennis and Golf are expected to be available for the incoming school year of 2024-2025. Individuals are currently working towards opening JV and Freshman teams to increase the overall participation of students with disabilities.

​Dr. Ludwig Guttmann opened a spinal injuries center in which rehabilitation sports evolved into recreational and competitive sports.

Stoke Mandeville Games milestone in Paralympic history.  In July 1948, the first wheelchair competition for athletes was placed for the Olympics.
